Blog 5 Working Conditions

After watching these videos it sadden me to now that large companies are taking advantage of women in poorer counties  such as Haiti and Tijuana  to work with such low pay and horrible working conditions.  The fact the worker are only asking for 60 cent in US dollars and aren’t receiving that much is unacceptable, I don’t think it’s fair for big name companies to exploited these people when they make such large profit from the products theses people help produces.  For Diseny to say oh it is ok to pay these people such little amount of money because they standards of living is much less then the US is unbelievable.  Obviously, these people are not making enough money because they cannot afford the minimal things they need, their children are surviving on coffee and sugar water but $2.40 a day is enough money to live off of.  In the US, there are certain work standards that employers have to uphold, I think that even as companies outsource their job they should still want to uphold their company to the same standards, providing their worker with a safe and healthy work environment.  I think that the women in the Maquilaopolis video have the right idea that in order to make a change they have to educate themselves and peers about what is happening.

  1. I agree with you 100%, just to go to Disney World is around $2,000 for each person, and they have the nerve to say they can't afford to pay their workers more. The thing is I bet the've all seen that video and still don't care. It should be mandatory to have a union in every factory not just in the US but around the world so this stuff wouldn't be able to happen.

  2. Amber:
Corporations only care about profits, well most of them anyway. They use overseas factories in order to make more money. By having these videos that document the atrocities that occur, perhaps changes can be made. But that may be difficult because conducting business internationally is different than conducting it in the U.S. Corporation can get cheaper labor without laws to protect the workers. Unfortunately, that’s just the way it is.

  3. What I found most interesting about the Disney video was that fact that when workers were asked what they would ask of the president of Disney, they said not to pull out of Haiti. They requested more jobs to be given and to be a leader for human rights for the Haitian government. It is sad that these large cooperations command such a large presence in these impoverished countries but do not use their power to better the people who live there. It is sad to think that the working conditions now at Disney (bad by any standards) is much better than what these workers suffered under the government rule. The government needs to be held responsible for how they treat their citizens and these cooperations can make a difference but choose not to.

  4. It is really sad how Disney is okay with how they treat their over seas workers. The fact that they did ask for more positions to open shows that they are grateful to have the job that they have, and they want others to have one as well. It's extremely sad how these big companies take advantage of poor countries.

  5. I agree! I was blown away by how low the workers wages were!I too was astonished that their babies and children had to live on coffe and sugar water. Can you imagine all of the physical and cognitive developement that is affected by the malnutition. This low of a wage should be against the law! At the very least the companies who are paying these wages SHOULD not allow this explotation of the workers. Shame on these companies...every last one of them.

  6. I agree with you that the companies should uphold the same standards for their workers not matter what country they are in. I think they needs to be more awareness of this. If more people knew about it will could demand change.

  7. Dear Amber,
It is shocking to see these videos. I wish there were stricter standards in the developing countries. To make ends meet the workers have to deal with terrible situations.
    Sincerely,

  8. I definitely agree, watching those videos are such an eye opener. I feel so bad for these people who survive on little to nothing and have to go days without having food. My heart breaks for them. I am so glad that the women are making themselves known and I am glad that there are people out there who are trying to make a difference and change the standard of pay and living overseas.
